Conference Overview

Implementing the main recommendations of Global Strategy for infant and Young Child Feeding (GSIY)

The world leaders in infant feeding gather in Al-Ain during UAE National Breastfeeding Week (8-14 November 2009) under the umbrella of “Global Breastfeeding Initiative for Child Survival (gBICS)”
The gBICS is a worldwide civil society-driven initiative aiming to accelerate progress in attaining the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, especially Goal 4, reduction of child mortality, by scaling up early, exclusive and continued breastfeeding.

The members of gBICS are from all parts of the world(Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia) and will join 2nd Regional Conference on Human Lactation organized by Family Medicine Institute, Al-Ain hospital. They will discuss the global challenges to optimum infant feeding practices, barriers to successful breastfeeding and formulating strategies to overcome these barriers implementing them worldwide. They will organize a pre-conference 2-day meeting and post-conference 2-day regional training in World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi).

This conference will address various topics updating the knowledge and practical skills in this particular field that most of the health care professionals are lacking. The basic aim is to re-establish breastfeeding culture in the region that was prevalent few decades ago. Through this conference the participants will learn how to remove the barriers, commercial influences and other causative factors responsible for inappropriate infant feeding practices, thus ultimately increasing the prevalence of breastfeeding in the region. Various experts from Switzerland, UK, Malaysia, Germany, Canada will deliver state-of-the-art lectures on different topics.
Increasing the prevalence of breastfeeding shall improve the childhood illnesses like diarrhoea and respiratory infections and ultimately the health costs by the government and community can be reduced significantly.

This conference will provide a venue for health care professionals to keep them abreast with updated knowledge and skills in the field of lactation management. If compared to the economic savings from prevalent breastfeeding, the cost of the conference will be very affordable.

The aim of this conference is to end the avoidable sufferings caused by inappropriate infant feeding.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Documenting the vital role of breastfeeding in reducing morbidity and mortality.
  2. To highlight the contribution of increased prevalence of breastfeeding in increasing economic status at national level.
