Department of Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology out-patient division is the third busiest clinic in Al Ain hospital. The division consists of:
- An outpatient section located in the east polyclinic. Approximately 12,500 patients are treated here annually.
- Inpatient section located in the male and female surgical wards.
- One ophthalmic examination room each in the ER, male surgery ward and female surgery ward.
- A state of the art operating theater with facility for anterior and posterior segment surgery
We provide round the clock emergency cover.

Scope of Services
Services & Activities
- All types of anterior segment surgeries except Lasik and oculoplastics
- Medical retina – digital Fluorescein angiography, laser therapy including laser indirect
- Optometry and orthoptic services
- Teaching medical students and Arab Board residents
- Medical fitness test for work
Existing Services
- Screening for and management of all types of conditions complicating diabetes, hypertension and premature babies
- Small incision suture less cataract surgery by Phacoemulsification and free offer of intraocular lenses to nationals and Daman card holders
- Diagnosis and management of glaucoma
- YAG laser for after-cataracts and narrow-angle glaucoma
- Diagnostic procedures e.g. digital fluorescein angiography, Ultrasonography and computerized perimetry
- Cataract operations including the offer of free intraocular lenses for nationals and Daman cardholders
- Diagnosis and management of errors of refraction
- Orthoptic and optometry services
- Advanced surgical management including microsurgical operations for a wide range of diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, squints, eyelid problems, penetrating eye injuries etc
- Laser therapy for diabetic retinopathy and other retinal disorders
- Laser indirect treatment for retinopathy of prematurity
- Ophthalmology services in Family Medical Center
Staff Position in the Department
- Medical staff: Consultant –1(3 more consultants are expected to join this year); Specialists -5; GP -1; Residents – variable numbers
- Technical staff: Optometrists- 4; Orthoptist-1
- Nursing staff: Nurse in charge –1; Staff nurses - 3
- Supporting staff: Receptionist - 1, Messenger -2, Cleaner -1
