Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology concerned with the investigation and treatment of health problems relating to the digestive system (oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, Colon) as well as the liver, bile duct system and pancreas.
An Emergency Endoscopy Service is offered 24 hours every day.

Scope of Services

The Department offers a variety of important investigations which are commonly known as Endoscopy, Neurogastroenterology . The following services can be offered.

Endoscopy:


  • Gastroscopy: Endoscopy of oesophagus, stomach and first part of small bowel

  • Enteroscopy Endoscopy of the small bowel with specially designed endoscopes

  • Colonoscopy: Endoscopy of the colon

  • Proctoscopy: Endoscopy of the anal channel and last part of the colon

  • ERCP: Endoscopy and imaging of the bile duct and pancreatic duct system

  • PTC: Percutaneous imaging of the bile duct system

  • Direct Cholangioscopy: Endoscopy of the bile ducts


Neurogastroenterology:


  • High Resolution Manometry: Investigation of the motility function in the oesophagus

  • pH-Metry: Investigation of acid content in the stomach and reflux of gastric content to the oesophagus

  • Breath test analysis: Test of milk intolerance, fructose intolerance (enriched in soft drinks), helicobacter colonization of the stomach, bacterial overgrowth in small bowel and much more

Equipment

The most modern equipment was purchased to offer best services. The Endoscopy Unit was completely refurbished in order to offer new services and to meet the needs of an increasing number of patients.

Location

The Endoscopy Unit is located in the Main Investigation Building and can be accessed through the main door as well as through a side door.

Staff

Dr. Claudia Behrendt also joined recently. She was working for many years in Berlin in Germany and is adding further competencies to the Department. One of her interests is to serve the female community.
