The Diabetes Centre forms part of the Medical Institute and is located in the female polyclinic building. The centre has adopted a multidisciplinary approach to provide state-of-the-art diabetes and endocrinology care, and complies with international standards and guidelines to ensure optimal care with guaranteed patient satisfaction. The services provided are tailored to the specific needs of the population it serves, which includes all adults and children within the Al Ain District.
According to research carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO), more than a quarter of UAE nationals suffer from diabetes, with 40 per cent of the population over the age of 60 having the disease. It is also estimated that diabetes affects more than 20 per cent of the adult population in the UAE – this is four times more than the worldwide average.
Patients with higher blood glucose levels than normal are said to have pre-diabetes and are at risk of developing the disease within 5 to 10 years. One goal of the Al Ain Hospital Diabetes Centre is to identify the diabetes risk factors at an early stage, which is essential as it may help prevent the onset of the disease.
The Diabetes Centre clinics are open on normal business days from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm according to the following timetable.
The daily diabetes clinic is staffed by 5 Internal Medicine Consultants, four of which are also professors at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the UAE University. A highly experienced diabetic educator is available to educate patients about their conditions and coach them on the different aspects of diabetes care and monitoring. At least one dietician is available at the centre on daily basis.
