Laboratory Services
The Laboratory Services department is open around the clock, is very well equipped with modern technology and has a dedicated staff.
The department provides clinical laboratory diagnosis of both in-patient and out-patient samples from the majority of units, including the Primary Health Care units, Hospital units, School Health, Preventive Medicine Department, Defence, and also police cases.
The department is a Centre for Tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics in the region and also screens individuals for marriage certificates.
Scope of Services
Haematology and Blood Bank
1. Routine work.
2. Special work including coagulation profiling, electrophoresis, and bone marrow evaluation.
3. Blood donation
4. Blood grouping, antibody screening, cross-matching and phenotyping as well as preparing blood components.
Microbiology and Parasitology
1. Routine work and special work such as culture and sensitivity tests for urine, stools, aerobic and anaerobic adult blood, sputum, and other body fluids such as cerebra-spinal fluid and semen.
2. The only centre for TB diagnostics in the Al Ain Medical District.
3. Parasite detection by means of the concentration method.
4. Semen analysis.
5. Occult blood testing.
Biochemistry
1. Routine chemistry such as BUE, lipid profile, cardiac enzymes, liver enzymes,
minerals, and all types of blood sugar, timed and random urine tests.
2. Special chemistry such as hormones (thyroid, reproductive), tumour markers, anaemia profiles, urine microalbunin, therapeutic drugs, HbA1c, osmolarity, PTH, immunoglobulin and specific proteins.
Serology and Virology
1. Serological tests for various infectious diseases and acute reactant protein.
2. Pregnancy testing.
3. Virology profile including Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B markers, Rubella and HIV.
Histology
1. Routine work and frozen sections.
2. Immunofloresence and immunhistochemistry
3. FNA clinics
4. Cervical smears and non-gyn cytology
The department also includes 74 dedicated technicians and 10 administrative support staff.
