Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Institute

The Intensive Care Unit of Al Ain Hospital is commonly referred to as the ICU or the Critical Care Unit. It is located on the first floor of Al Ain Hospital’s main building in close proximity to the main Operating Theatre and Emergency Centre. The unit has excellent equipment, complying with international standards, for supporting the lives of critically ill patients, and it has excellent backup services for diagnostics procedures. The unit is accredited to train postgraduate medical doctors and undergraduate medical students.

Scope of Services

All patients requiring admission to the unit are referred to the specialist intensivist on duty. Our patients are referred from a number of different sites, including the Emergency Centre, the Operating Theatre, the Acute Ward areas, other areas of the hospital and also other hospitals in the Eastern Region. The patients cared for in the unit are usually trauma patients, critically ill medical patients, obstetric and gynaecology patients with co-existing medical problems, and paediatric patients. The services provided are predominantly life-saving and are reserved for those patients requiring continuous intense monitoring and intensive therapy.

Visiting Hours:
As most of the time the patients needing intensive care are very ill, we encourage only immediate family members to visit the patient, and only two visitors at a time are permitted at the bedside. As the patient may require lengthy periods of care, procedures and planning of care, there may be delays before you are able to visit, or your visit may have to be interrupted. We also strongly encourage a rest period for patients between 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm.

To avoid inconvenience visitors may liaise with the staff caring for the patient to determine the most appropriate time to visit, or the patient’s immediate relatives can provide a contact number to facilitate communication with the ICU staff.

Departmental Staff

We use a coordinated team approach to care for our patients throughout their stay with us. This includes 24-hour on-site coverage by highly experienced senior staff. Our Intensive Care Team consists of Physicians, Intensivists, Intensive Care Nurses, a Clinical Pharmacist, a Clinical Nutritionist and Respiratory Therapists. With the help of the nursing staff and the Allied Health Staff, we implement a coordinated team approach, offering an integrated healthcare environment by providing excellence in critical care. This optimises outcomes and minimises complications, while being efficient, cost effective and showing respect and compassion for patients and family values.
